Carpet Cleaning and Your Finances
If there was ever a time to take care of what you have, it’s now. For many of us caught in the current wave of economic uncertainty, the thought of having to replace expensive carpeting, even a few years from now, is bracing. Yet most people do little to maintain what they have right now.
One reason is they just don’t know better. I’ve had people tell me that walking on a carpet is what wears it out. In fact, abrasive soil has to be present for foot traffic to wear out the carpet. And it’s present in the everyday comings and goings in your house. Like sandpaper, the sand and grit in soiled carpet fibers initially dull the look of the carpet. But eventually this abrasive soil will destroy the fibers themselves if not removed through cleaning.
Improved Air Quality In Your Home
Do you feel stuffed up more often in the winter? Endure more frequent colds and generally feel lousy? Does the air start to smell stale? Since we keep our homes closed up for at least 6 months of the year here in Northern New England, the quality of the air in your home can deteriorate substantially.
Pollutants in the air filter through your carpet. The carpet traps them so you don’t breathe them over and over. But what happens when that trap gets full? Your family starts breathing dust mite debris, pollens, pollutants, fungus, spores, bacteria and a long list of other really gross stuff. Once your carpets’ natural filtering ability gets full, it is time for a thorough cleaning for your health’s sake.
Think about how often you clean the vinyl or tile floor in your kitchen. Can you imagine what it would look like if you let it go for a month? How about 6 months? A year?
Now carpeting does a terrific job of hiding dirt. The dirt goes down to the base of the fibers where you can’t see it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not there. So, at the risk of repeating myself; if you or your family feel lousy in the winter, it could be the air you’re breathing. The quality of that air can be greatly improved by having your carpets professionally cleaned.
The fact is, clean your carpets frequently, when traffic lanes first start to appear, and they will last longer, look better, and protect your family’s health.
Choosing the Service Provider
It can be difficult to make the right carpet cleaning decisions. Here are a few pointers from my experience.
1.Trying to do it yourself may seem to save money but it’s your valuable time & hard work.
In order to even come close to the results we can achieve, you would have to vacuum every day and use your steam cleaner at least once a month, or more. Do you really want to work that hard?
When they lived nearby, my Mom and Dad had a dog that liked to sleep in the same place on the carpet every night. But they didn’t want to bother me so once every two or three weeks Dad would get out the store -bought carpet shampooer and clean the carpet. We still had to go in once every 3 to 6 months to clean the carpet professionally because the little shampooer was limited in what it could do. I noticed we were taking out just as much left- over soap residue from the shampooer as actual soil.
This is a real problem with the homeowner models; in addition to not being able to deliver really hot water to the job at hand, their vacuuming power is limited. This can compound the soiling problem because sticky soap residue left in the carpet tends to hold onto newly deposited soil causing the area to visually “get dirty quickly”.
2. The fact is, if the store-bought shampooer or rented units worked one-tenth as good as my $45,000.00 state of the art system, I would never have spent that money.
I use to use a unit similar to the ones you can rent at the store. They do a better job than the consumer units but are still very limited. When you’re cleaning carpets, nothing beats being able to use the right cleaning agent with the knowledge that you’ll be able to remove that cleaning agent with the soil. The system we use most frequently is “hot water extraction” also known as “steam cleaning”. This is the method recommended by the major carpet manufacturers and the method we feel, does the best job. Jeff, our carpet and upholstery cleaning technician had been cleaning carpets for more than twenty years. There are other cleaning methods available and each one has its strengths and weaknesses. 3. Choosing a company solely by price does not work.
If you are the type of person who thinks the cheapest mechanic or cheapest plumber is the right one for you, we’re probably not the right carpet cleaning company for you. Companies price in so many ways, it is hard to compare. The truth is, when we invest wisely, we get what we pay for.
The fact is, our residential clients are the homeowners who have the nicest homes in the Upper Valley. Our typical client has thousands of dollars worth of fine furniture, carpets and rugs in their home. Our service is geared to cleaning and maintaining those furnishings. We know how to clean everything from nylon and Berber carpet to an upholstered sofa covered with a chintz fabric to a hand knotted oriental rug from Iran.
The property management companies in the area that don’t care about quality of work or service don’t call us.
On the other hand, our regular commercial clients include multiple municipal town halls, police stations and libraries, and offices for some of the largest businesses in the Upper Valley.
Here are the reasons I think, they all call us:
1. We’re on time. None of this, “I will be there between noon and five p.m.” We give you an appointment time with a

one-hour window of arrival. Things do change throughout the workday however. A job doesn’t take as much time as we thought it would. Or a client adds a little extra work. So if we are off schedule for some reason, we call ahead to let you know, as soon as we know.
2. We bend over backwards to meet the needs of our established clients. This business is built on long term relationships. So when we’re booking weeks in advance we let our clients know so they can plan accordingly. When they have an emergency, we do our best to respond as quickly as possible.
3. We answer the phone live. Call between 8:30 and 5:00 M-F and you’ll only get voice mail if all the phones are ringing at once. We return calls promptly.
4. You get honest pricing. I hate companies that bait and switch… or charge me extra for something they told me was going to be part of the service. When you call we’ll try to give you an approximate idea over the phone of how much it will cost. If you know how many rooms are involved and how many square feet of carpet you want cleaned, you’ll get a much more accurate “guesstimate”. (You arrive at square feet by multiplying the length of the room by the width). In any event, before we start the job we’ll give you an exact price so you won’t be surprised.
5. You get a technician with over 20 years of experience. Jeff Flanders has spent his entire career cleaning carpets and upholstery. He likes what he does and likes making clients happy.
6. He takes the time needed to clean every square inch thoroughly.
7. We can set you up with our “Always Clean” program where every other cleaning is half price.
8. One Call Service: Carpets, Upholstery, Oriental rugs, Drapes, Protectant, Pet odor removal. I’ve even cleaned sails.
9. BECAUSE YOU GET MORE THAN A SATISFACTION GUARANTEE: If we miss a spot or should a spot re-appear, we will return to re-clean it at our cost. If you are not satisfied with any area, we will return to clean that area. If you are still not satisfied, we will refund your money.

We can’t fix everything. We can’t restore carpet pile that’s been worn down due to lack of cleaning. We can’t put color back into a spot in the carpet that has been bleached out by one of those “removes -all-stains” products sold in grocery stores. Nor can we remove all stains. Our stain removal record is probably over 90%. But it’s not 100%. We can remove pet accidents. But if the pet is using the same spot on the carpet repeatedly, cleaning and treating the surface of the carpet isn’t going to take care of the problem.
In any event, we’ll tell you up front what we can and can’t do.
