Experts agree that proper landscaping can add between 15 - 20% to the value of your property and can return up to 200% of your investment.
Unlike interior home renovations that must be updated every few years, landscaping never goes out of style (remember paneling?)! A landscaping project is the only home improvement project that actually increases in value as it ages. Homes with a mature landscape are much more appealing to a potential buyer and command a higher market price.
Making a splash with vibrant perennials
Perennials are the best bang for the buck. If you purchase early in the spring, you can find 2 quart sizes or 1 gallon for half the price of what they are mid-season. As the season progresses, garden centers stock larger perennials which will be more expensive.
Smaller is better when it comes to perennials. Once the perennials have been in the ground for a year, there is really no difference between a 2 quart and a 1 gallon plant size.
Some people mistakenly think that perennials dont need maintenance since they come up every year. This is wrong. Depending on the type of perennial, they may need to be dead-headed, cut back to the ground mid-season or divided every few years to keep from choking out their herbaceous neighbors.
So if you dont want high maintenance plants, be sure to select well behaved perennials. Salvia, some varieties of Day Lillies and Shasta Daisies are quite easy to maintain. Perennials provide lasting color through the summer months. You have to decide whether you want early, late or mid-summer bloom if you only have a small space to work with.
