If your septic system is properly designed, installed and maintained it should provide you with many years of trouble free service, ONLY IF IT IS PROPERLY MAINTAINED. The key to the life and service of any septic system is proper maintenance.
A septic system is designed to condition untreated liquid household waste (sewage) so that it can be readily dispersed and percolated into the sub soil. Percolation through the soil accomplishes much of the final purification of the effluent including the destruction of disease producing bacteria. Your septic tank is the 1st step to this process. As sewage enters the tank its rate of flow is reduced so that larger solids sink to the bottom or rise to the surface. These solids are retained in the tank and the clarified effluent is suspended. The solids and liquids in the tank are partially decomposed by bacteria and other natural processes. Treated effluent from the septic tank is discharged to the leach field while the sludge and scum from accumulated bacteria is stored in the tank. These residues need to be periodically cleaned out of the tank. Otherwise the sludge and scum will eventually build up and cause clogs in the leach field and home. This can cause failure of a leach system which is unhealthy, illegal and costly. Periodic cleaning of your septic system is essential to its proper function and life span.

You should inspect you septic tank every year. If the sludge and surface scum combined are equal to more than a third of the depth of the tank your tank should be pumped out. This should be done at least every two to three years. If your septic tank has a filter this should be cleaned and inspected once a year. Inspect the entire leach field area for any soggy or wet spots and odor every year. These can indicate a system failure. Know where your septic tank and leach field are located. This can save you lots of time and money on digging and locating.

Avoid flushing bulky waste or grease into the septic system. Do not flush diapers, wipes, cigarette butts, sanitary napkins and condoms, paper towels, rags or any other foreign material. These can plug the sewer and leach field lines. Minimize or eliminate the use of sink disposal systems. Do not flush toxic materials into the system such as paint thinner, gasoline, pesticides, chlorine, drain cleaner, and other caustic and toxic materials. These substances can kill the natural bacteria in the tank needed for the system to function properly. Do not bother adding enzymes or commercial additives to your system. The bacteria already provided by the tanks natural function provides all the bacteria you need. Conserve on water. Too much water can overload a system and effect the function. Do not drive vehicles or allow heavy machinery and livestock on your leach field. The weight can compact the soil and case breaks in the pipe. Do not place buildings, sheds, or other structures over your septic system. Do not allow brush, trees or plants to grow on your septic system. This can cause root damage and make access to the system troublesome.
Some signs that your system may be ready for pumping and / or in failure are slow draining and gurgling pipes, backup of sewage into the home, sewer odor, wet or soggy spots on or around septic system

During the pumping of your septic tank we will inspect the general condition of the tank. We will also inspect the inlet and outlet baffles to make sure they are in tact and functioning properly. We will also check for any signs of leach field failure.
New London Septic Service provides professional leach field Inspections for those buying or selling a home. During the inspection we check the condition of the material in the leach field, we check the condition of the tank and baffles and write a complete report on the condition of the septic system. If requested, we also provide camera inspections.
